Stylish and New BMW M2 coupe revealed

We can say that this is the BMW M car revolution.

M Division’s new managing director, Dr Friedrich Nitschke says that revolutionary new M3 is there in the pipeline.

He also says that "In the 1M Coupe, we have a starter car for the M Division, and we are continuing to develop this project.

Such models will be sporty with an extraordinary low fuel consumption.

This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the 1M Coupe proves there is room for M2, a coupe."

BMW M2

M2 is all set to draw attention to the 2 series with a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels.

Because of the bold look it is expected that this series will be instantly recognizable from the entry-level car with unique front and rear end styling.

It has been said that the company is currently testing with two engines.
  1. 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo very similar to that in the 1M Coupe and it offers around 350bhp
  2. Innovative tri-turbo, giving similar performance but better fuel economy.
Power will be obtained from BMW’s all new DCT whereas brakes will be taken from M3.

To maintain the coupe’s weight to a minimum, the company is planning to make use of the advanced carbon fibre plastics.

BMW reports that only 30 of the 450 right-hand-drive versions of the two-door 1 Series it has built remain unsold. The all-new two-door is expected to arrive here in 2015.

Automobile Mag: “Can BMW Build A Real Sports Car?”

Sports cars have never been BMW’s specialty. The 507, the 503, the Z1, and the Z8 were all unloved loss-makers. In a recent article, the US magazine outlines some of the pros and cons of the Z2 underpinning platform.

Initially, BMW planned to build Z2 on the brand's upcoming front-wheel-drive architecture. However, the mere rumor of a front-wheel-drive BMW sports car raised enough of an uproar within the enthusiast community that BMW officials are now considering two far better options.

The first would be to continue developing the car on this platform, alongside the Mini Roadster and Coupe, but to take a page from Audi and make it four-wheel drive. Some undoubted advantages of this strategy are:

  1. A very short path to production.
  2. The traction bonus inherent to four-wheel drive,
  3. The economies of scale offered by hitching up to a high-volume architecture.
The bad news is that Plan B scraps all and pushes the launch back to 2015 or even 2016 and the good news is that this route revolves around rear-wheel drive. The key is the next 1-series.

BMW - Z2 - Red Coupe
BMW - Z2 - Red Coupe
Although the European-market hatchback 1-series will definitely move to front-wheel drive to compete better with the Volkswagen Golf and the like, BMW is now thinking that the coupe and the convertible should stay rear-wheel drive permanently and perhaps become the 2-series.

Indeed, the company just filed a trademark for the M2 name. The Z2, of course, fits the new nomenclature to perfection and would share the 2-series platform. The Z2 would feature three different 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines rated from 170 to 270 hp.

In order to avoid overlap with the Z2, the next Z4 might shift up market and grow a bit. A new mark Z6, is also in the cards. The range would likely start with today's 300-hp sDrive35i and go up from there to 340- and 380-hp variants.

Still not enough grunt? Then zoom in on the M Version, which will likely share its 450-hp straight six with the next M3.

Audi’s New Upcoming Small Sports Car

Audi is now working on a new and small supercar which is expected to play a significant role in the company’s future sports car program.  This new mid-engine supercar will be named as R4.

Major elements of R4’s front-end structure will be shared with the third-generation Porsche Boxster and two-seated Volkswagen. According to one Audi source The R4’s rear structure will be "radically different”.

Audi R4

British magazine
AutoCar has unveiled some details about this upcoming sports car. The most powerful R4 will come as a 350bhp version developed by Quattro GmbH.

This top model will be powered by the same turbocharged 2.5 liter five-cylinder engine from the RS3 and TT-RS, promising fantastic performance figures like an acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in less than 5.0 seconds with a top speed of around 280km/h.

Inspired by the victory of the Audi racing team at Le Mans, a diesel engine is under consideration as well. R4 will be available with the twin-turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder which will make its debut in the 2012 model of the A3. This engine should deliver at least 200bhp.

Fully electric R4 doesn’t have a high priority; hence Audi plans for two gearbox options
  • a standard six-speed manual
  • a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch unit
A new, electronically-operated differential with torque vectoring to increase traction and make cornering more neutral is also under consideration.

To make sure there is a space in the line-up without causing a conflict with existing models this new small sports car goes on sale until after the third-generation TT, suggesting that the R4 is destined for production in 2014/15.

R4 could line up along with the second-generation R8 supercar, with which it will share the styling themes (inspired by the E-tron Spyder concept).
